Action Contre la Faim in Mozambique

AN ESTIMATED 1.9 MILLION PEOPLE ARE ACUTELY FOOD INSECURE IN MOZAMBIQUE. OF THESE, 71 PERCENT (1.32 MILLION PEOPLE) ARE IN THE FOUR PROVINCES OF CABO DELGADO, NIASSA, NAMPULA, AND ZAMBEZIA, WHERE MANY INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE ARE CONCENTRATED.

Action Contre la Faim in Mozambique operates in the province of Cabo Delgado, one of the poorest in the country, where there are 663,276 internally displaced persons (November 2021).

This area has been affected since late 2017 by a low-intensity armed conflict between an armed insurgency and Mozambican security forces. In early 2021, the conflict expanded, with insurgents successfully asserting territorial control over some areas and access to the northeastern districts of Cabo Delgado significantly reduced.

Action contre la Faim assists conflict-affected populations in Cabo Delgado province, including IDPs and host communities, given the indirect impact that the conflict has on them. An estimated that 45% to 65% of the displaced live in host communities, with significant variations between districts and fluctuating figures.

Action Against Hunger’s program aims to reduce morbidity and mortality among conflict-affected populations in Cabo Delgado province through targeted multi-sectoral support in the areas of health and nutrition, water, hygiene and sanitation, food security and livelihoods, and an integrated emergency response.
